Peanuts = The Walking Dead?

I don't usually follow Lio by Mark Tatulli, but I happened to catch yesterday's strip. Check it out...
I haven't seen any commentary about it, but I can see two distinct interpretations.
  1. Tatulli is commenting on the fact that Peanuts is just a series of reprints these days, and that the guy who created them originally has been dead for over a decade.
  2. Tatulli is just using the Peanuts characters as representatives of newspaper comics as a whole, and he's noting that newspapers are zombie-like shells of their past, and even though they're still around and visible, they don't have any of the vibrancy that they used to.
Any other thoughts?

I think he was speaking of Peanuts, specifically, and the perpetual rerun nature of the strip... here is the strip from March 23...
