A little over a year ago, I posted a note that basically said that writers can overrely on the basic story structure that Joseph Campbell laid out in The Hero with a Thousand Faces. I just came across this Tom Gauld cartoon that puts the same idea in a much more succinct form.![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Q1XN8xTTj9u3PMqpA4CCmwOmsJveA_NP33S062LAzQ6R0WwnDS60Ju68r5QmP_xn2YIP8FoN7rycf2_uzm5KmV21OdB3tLwu4prz04zt1d0RWtyYnQgJ952oN2rxTwro61YKFw/s1600/herosjourney.jpg)
Campbell's work is certainly useful and well-worth studying; it just becomes less fun when it gets treated as a simple formula.
