Pricey Hobby

So I picked up a Stronium Dog collection recently that set me back about $30. I'd heard of the series back in the day when Fleetway/Quality Comics was publishing Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper reprints, but I don't think they ever got around to Johnny Alpha for some reason. I was always curious, so I picked up the new collection. I'm about halfway through it at this point, and quite enjoying the stories.

What I didn't realize was that it was co-created and largely drawn by Carlos Ezquerra, who also co-created Judge Dredd and drew some of my favorite stories. I've always found his inking style intriguing; it has a sort of rough-hewn edge to it that I've never seen replicated anywhere. His illustrations carry a realistic weight to them, too, which is incredibly surprising given some of the designs he came up with. A lot of characters that ought to look downright silly, but he manages to pull them off.

Of course, the downside now is that I've just added another artist to my list of guys to keep an eye for. Which means that I'll have to track down the other Strontium Dog collection, and the Judge Dredd ones as well. Those alone, I figure, are around $250, not even figuring Ezquerra's other work into the equation.

It actually makes me glad marvel and DC aren't putting out much of anything good these days -- I can focus my wallet onto quality pieces that I'll actually get some enjoyment out of.
